How are relationships and ways of knowing mediated through people, places, and things? “Aftermath” draws on the last ten years of my life, the distinct after of losing my mom. In the before, our relationship was mediated through my childhood and my mother’s alcoholism. In the after, I felt a need to figure out who she was, in hopes of feeling like she was still there beside me. As I grew up and the weight of my mom’s addictions became clearer, I reconciled my experiences as a child, learning to hold contradictions of who she was. In sitting with those feelings, I began to find a way of knowing her that didn’t require anyone else. Though I’ll never get her back, this seemed to be good enough.
